Interesting article about a Sheriff’s office that has taken back a jail that had been privatized through the Corrections Corporation of America. Through some innovative steps, he looks to save $1 million the first year in operating costs compared to what it cost privatized.
Perhaps this will catch some people’s attention and slow the privatization trend.
I’m a strong opponent of private prisons. I don’t think the criminal justice system should be tainted by profit considerations. Cost considerations? Sure. But not profit.

You don’t have to say “according to some advocates, the earth revolves around the sun.” He didn’t find anyone who disputed the notion that legalization would solve the grows on public lands issue; only some that didn’t want legalization because they were making money from it being illegal.

From time to time I wonder, will people are ever grasp that the best description of a plant derived cannabinoid compound would be the word “regulator”? It’s not anyway shocking to me to think that cannabis can cause skinny people to gain weight and fat people to lose weight. I’ve noticed that an awful lot of the prohibitionists suffer from male pattern baldness. I really, really think we need prioritize demonstrating that using whole plant cannabinoid medicine as a cure for male pattern baldness will work. I hear lots of bald guys would give their left nut to grow hair on their heads. The scalp is lousy with CB-2 receptors so it should work. But even better is that a topical salve used to introduce cannabinoids to CB-2 receptors doesn’t get you high. If I were balding I’d be giving it the old college try. Unfortunately it looks like I’ve gotten dad’s genes and will die with a full head of hair, so I just don’t have the opportunity.

Thanks Duncan, a man after my own heart. I found the same conclusions a few years ago in the seemingly duel functions of the immune system of a patient. Slows it down when over producing joint lubricant or speeds it up when necessary to fight off infection and swelling. I’ve been giving Hemp Oil to patients with UTI’s and keeping them off strong antibiotecs. It’s also good mixed with Ganja extract for skin breakdowns. Stops a weeping wound in edema areas. I found nothing otc that worked. But I like your examples too. This old Nahas/NIDA bait and switch using data from one study to prove a point of another. The car can go and stop. Why the heck is there almost no cultivation of papaver somniferum in the US? I really like to have someone ‘splain it to me. There are only around half a dozen plants which can be successfully farmed in Afghanistan due to the very poor soil and harsh extremes of temperature. We’ve got plenty of land that’s considered high altitude in the US. I have heard that coca requires cultivation at an altitude higher than 1500 feet. It would take me less than two hours to drive to West Virginia or even places in western Maryland that fit the definition. I had decided that the reason that there’s no coca production in the US stemmed from the lack of seed availability but I must admit that conclusion was reached before the advent of the Internet. But with the exception of fully tropical the US has every other possible climate and altitude available, and tropical is easy enough to fake with a greenhouse in a sub-tropical environment.
You should keep in mind that I was the idiot in high school that wouldn’t listen to reason when everyone told me that I couldn’t grow good pot anywhere that wasn’t within 5° or 10° of the equator, and was handsomely rewarded for that idiocy. For less than $20 it’s worth a try. I can’t even put in words how much I enjoyed Thai stick back in the ’70s. I’m definitely in favor of a nostalgic revival. If nothing else I should get some pretty flowers to enjoy.

Every year or so, in Seattle, authorities will haul in one or two little old ladies from the Asian community for growing poppies in their gardens. They used to have liaison officers go out every year to try to explain that those pretty flowers should not be harvested.
My buddy Dave’s greenhouse was full of poppies last year, but he screwed up the extraction. I told him to use the traditional methods but he insisted on solvent extraction. End product was unusable.

To this day the best pot I’ve ever toked stateside was a pinroll that came from a Vet returning from Vietnam. I won the draft lottery and decided it was in my best interest to stay home. Most of the returning Vets I knew told me it wasn’t like the brochure. 40 years ago I started doing my part as a Patriot by toking on a daily basis. The last 20 sharing it with patients as a caregiver. It’s getting ridiculous. The dung worriers still act as if the internet doesn’t exist and they still control the entire message about Ganja. Maybe on the TV, Radio and Newsprints, but not in reality. We are so far ahead of the AMA treating patients it’s pretty near comical. They just say no and the patient suffers. We say yes and relieve symptoms. To profit on the persecution of American Seniors, Vets and the Hippies keeping it alive. It’s Domestic Terrorism no different than the demolition of a few buildings. 10 million have been put through the humiliating process of this Ganjawar Just Us Stism. One trillion dollars spent perpetuating a Police Action for profit, no different than the War in Vietnam they labeled a Police Action. Just so the corporations could profit without being tried as War Criminals profiteering or trading with the enemy. Iraq after “Mission Accomplished”, Korea, Kosovo and Colombia. On and on, sending kids to get shot as their duty, then putting them in cages for growing some pot. Insane. Time for more Vets and Soccer Moms to join in the chorus and end this stupidity for the profits of a few Koch Bros private prisons or crude oil for the tanks and trucks. It’s the only thing that has ever helped me deal with those memories. Finally, more than thirty years out, I can ‘just stop thinking’ about that stuff. Instead of it being the entire focus of my day. The emotional load is off, they really are just memories now. Before that, the feelings of fear and the adrenalin would take over, and I would be paralyzed, unable to do anything but stay home and fight those same battles over and over and over in my head. Pot has returned the past to the past and allowed me to leave it there (most of the time).
On sidebar in Reason, I salute the libertarians for being honest about the deform of SS. The mainstream GOP would have the populace screened to collect it, the libertarians would just eliminate SS altogether. Between 2004 and 2006 I lived in Radcliff, Kentucky, which is just down the road from Fort Knox. When I was a wee lad in the 1960s Fort Knox was where they kept all the money. IIRC King Tut robbed Ft Knox in an episode of the Adam West Batman TV show, so I had this other worldy feeling over awe whenever I drove past. The feeling persisted even though I knew that all that is in the Ft Knox vault any more is a huge pile of IOUs.
The government keeps the socialist security “trust fund” somewhere in West Virginia. But they just keep the Socialist Security IOUs in a filing cabinet. Why spend all that money on a vault and security just for a stack of IOUs? The interest those bonds are accrue are also paid with IOUs. It’s not like they’re bearer bonds, so why would anyone want to steal them?
I have no clue why anyone would think that the Social Security “trust fund” is anything other than smoke and mirrors accounting that would make the former Enron accountants blush.

Its not just VN Vets, I served 11 yrs with the 1/75th regiment. After multipule tours back to back in the middle east, away from my wife and kids, having lost many a friend to combat, I smoke becuase the meds the VA puts me on can kill me and makes me into such a zombie I cant function. I have now been able to leave behind the leagle meds for something that works and makes my kids glad to have dad back. The nightmares will never go away but I can handle them in a better fashion now while getting sleep, oh yeah and now owning my own business that is still flurishing in these ecinomic times.

That story in the AJC is basically just reporting the facts. Judge Peters wasn’t even remotely acting as if he thought that he was Tommy Chong in 1978. On the other hand he certainly sounds like he’s an organic nutcake that needed to be removed.

I see we dated the same gal at some time. LOL It is written that “we will always hear the screams in the night.” We just don’t have to dwell on them, thanks to her. And I agree, Gary. I quit taking their slop. Woke up in a whole new world.
It’s also fun to take what we learned and apply it to the reform movement. A hearty “Garry Owen” to you two and the other vets who are always welcome on Pete’s Couch.
DoseNation is going on indefinite hiatus. It’s been fun, but burnout from sitting in front of the computer has kept me from being able to maintain the blog the way I’d like. The site may be revived in the future, but for now this experiment has come to an end.
