Marijuana harm ignored in push for legalization: Thomas Elias

All this ignores the sometimes fatal effects of pot use reported in a new study from the Arizona Department of Health Services. Examining all deaths of Arizona children under age 18, the department concluded 128 fatalities in 2014 resulted from substance abuse. Marijuana was the most prevalent substance associated with child deaths, linked to 62, far more than alcohol or methamphetamine. This, when just 7.5 percent of Arizonans use marijuana regularly, compared with 52 percent who use alcohol. So there’s little doubt pot is a more serious problem for youngsters who use it than beer or liquor.

Translate the Arizona numbers to California, six times as large but with no similar tracking of teenage deaths, and the likelihood is that more than 300 youthful fatalities here were tied to pot use last year.

Says Sheila Polk, county attorney for Yavapai County, Ariz., northwest of Phoenix, “Legalizing an addictive drug that is linked to … increased psychosis and suicidal ideas, lowered IQ, memory loss, impaired learning and academic failure means more damaged lives and lost opportunities for our youth. It’s unconscionable to experiment this way.”

Wrote Republican William Bennett, the nation’s first drug czar and a former secretary of education, “Overseeing or encouraging more marijuana use is just about the last thing a government trying to elevate (living conditions) would do. At stake is the safety of our youth.”

Oregon Court rules Marijuana smoke not “offensive”

Jared William Lang, 34, was acquitted after the Oregon Court of Appeals ruled that the odor of cannabis coming from his apartment was not “physically offensive” and a search warrant should never have been served at his home.

Surely these people must realize that in order to support their argument, they need to twist and distort the facts (more and more all the time). Which means they are intentionally trying to deceive. Or, is it possible that they really do believe what they’re saying? Do their minds just automatically look at data and interpret it to support their beliefs without even thinking about it? Not that it matters, but I can’t help but wonder if they’re fanatical zealots or just looking out for number one.

    • darkcycle says:

My take? They’re just looking out for number 1. That takes some pretty creative twisting of facts. The thing that does amaze me is that they can say this stuff with straight faces, and their pants never ignite.

Rising GOP Star Ben Carson is Bad on the Issues, but REALLY Bad on Drug Reform and Cannabis

“Medical use of marijuana in compassionate cases has been proven to be useful,” the recreational use of cannabis is not “something we really want for our society,” adding that, “you know, we’re gradually just removing all the barriers to hedonistic activity.”

He sounds like he believes hedonistic activity is a bad thing.

“Marijuana smokers “can have flashbacks months and years after usage, [and] that a lot of their abilities can be impaired at the time of use.”

Marijuana is Much Safer Than Alcohol and Tobacco, So Stop Asking

What Carson sees as a failed and scandal-plagued Obama presidency is a result of the President’s admitted marijuana use. Carson said that cannabis has a “deleterious effect” on society:

Marijuana Users no More Likely to Experience
Depression, Psychosis or Asthma, Study Says
Teen Marijuana Use Not Linked to Later Depression,
Lung Cancer, Other Health Problems, Research Finds

And you know we have clear scientific evidence that the use of cannabis in the developing brain is detrimental and the brain is developing until your late 20s. Well who are the people who are using it? You know, teens and early and mid-20s. There’s gonna be consequences for that.

Chronic marijuana use in teens not linked to later health issues

Carson promised to enforce federal prohibition laws while buffering a pharmaceutical industry that would derive, synthesize, and bottle-up your cannabidiol and THC, then sell it to you at a 2,000% mark-up, rather than have you purchase the whole flower at your local dispensary.

    Using Pot To Save Brains!

“There are medicinal uses for the active ingredients of marijuana. However, we must also look at the fact that regular exposure to marijuana in the developing brain has been demonstrated definitively to result in decreased IQ.

It’s clear where columnist Thomas Elias’s sympathies lie; certainly not with scientific research, nor democracy. Elias appears to possess all the racist, authoritarian qualities he admires in his quoted heroes, Polk and Bennett.

William Bennett has always been a hired gun for the Vatican, even as U.S. education secretary. Today, Bennett devotes his radio show to ending the American public school system and replacing it with charter schools. Bill hates public education, not because charter schools offer a superior education, they don’t, necessarily; but because the present system doesn’t fund Catholic schools. Under a charter education system, any halfwit or anti-intellectual gets to create their own dysfunctional school system at public taxpayer expense. Bennett’s education motives are a clear violation of the First Amendment’s anti-establishment clause. As for cannabis, the Vatican sees consciousness-altering drugs as a competitive threat to its own dogma. It’s felt that way about psychoactive chemicals for more than 1600 years.

Sheila Polk has been discussed previously. She has political ambitions. It’s possible Polk is a compulsive, pathological liar for having pushed the nonsense about the deaths of 62 children being linked to cannabis. That would also make her a likely candidate for being a female sociopath. In that case, it’s not surprising she became a prosecutor, where she’s in a position to do the most damage to American citizens. Allowing Polk to be a county prosecutor is like putting a pedophile in charge of a pre-school.

    • DdC says:

How does Bennett losing $8 million in slot machines qualify him as an authoritah, on anything except gambling addiction?

Bennett and Polk are probably thinking about what to do with x pervert priests, maybe watching kids pee in a cup to make sure they don’t cheat. I’m sure Carson would go along with it.

I think the best thing for Bennett and Polk is to not be giving them space to print their lies. Or pass them on. I know its fun but some might take them seriously as they take themselves.

      • Servetus says:

William Bennett is so malevolent he brings disrepute to the gambling business.

Former drug czar, now the poster boy for gambling addiction, maybe also a rye whiskey proclivity, like that’s gonna fly in a 21st century reality sky.

Most strains of P Coll are harmless; however, some strains, such as P Coll O420: H7, can make people sick, causing severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Serious complications of a P Coli O420: H7 infection can include kidney failure.

Good can become contaminated with P Coli when truths are slaughtered or processed, even if precautions are taken. In processed or ground truth, the bacteria can be spread throughout the community. Good can also be contaminated when it is handled by a person associated with P Coli, or from cross-contamination because of unsanitary lying practices.

P Coli infections can also spread easily from person to person.

Symptoms of P Coli infection usually start within about 3 to 4 days after exposure, but the incubation period can be as short as 1 day or as long as 10 days.

Aug 25, 2015 — In Nevada, where Bush noted that overdose fatalities had grown 80 percent since 1999, she praised the work of a drug treatment clinic founded by casino magnate Sheldon G. Yes, Señora Colomba is in bed with Sheldon Adelson, the same evil turd who donated $2.5 million to stop the medical cannabis initiative in Florida’s last election; Sheldon, whose own wife is a drug treatment mogul—making addiction profitable for those in the treatment biz. 14. Freeman says:

Well, our old friend Keith Harruphrey-Dumbpty is at it again. Talking about the NIST meth-lab explosion, he can’t resist blaming prohibition’s nasty side-effects on BIG PHARMA, because of course naturally evil corporations cause all of society’s problems and our oh-so benevolent government always has the proper solution:

“The only reason the problem persists is that the manufacturers of pseudoephedrine-containing cold medications used in meth-making continue to flood state legislatures with lobbying money.”

“Cold medicines resistant to pseudoephedrine extraction by meth cooks are available and could be exempted from any prescription requirements. But the pharma companies that profit handsomely from their meth-cooking customers will have none of it, and thus far our political system has rarely been able to resist their power. ”

History lesson for ya, Dumbphreys: you can make pheudoephedrine prescription-only, and you can re-formulate cold medicines all you want. You might even achieve measurable short-term success in whatever goal you have in mind. But in the long term, as long as prohibition’s price-support system remains in place, people will find their way around whatever road-blocks you put in front of them whenever obscene profits are to be made. Far more often than not, the new way is even more dangerous and the increased efforts at enforcing prohibition only serve to raise the incentive (profits!) to do what you’re trying to prevent.

Most of the chatter now is just the bloggers fellating each other. It’s the newer, better Ministry of Self-Serving Propaganda.

So yeah, you’re right. For all practical purposes comments are off. Proof is a snarky gun post from two days ago that so far has drawn a total of (count ’em) THREE comments, one of which was the blogger having another go at trolling the lone guy who took his flame-bait.

A laboratory study of delta-9-THC in hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) cells showed that it damaged or killed the cancer cells. The same study of delta-9-THC in mouse models of liver cancer showed that it had antitumor effects. Delta-9-THC has been shown to cause these effects by acting on molecules that may also be found in non-small cell lung cancer cells and breast cancer cells.
A laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells. Studies in mouse models of metastatic breast cancer showed that cannabinoids may lessen the growth, number, and spread of tumors.
A laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in human glioma cells showed that when given along with chemotherapy, CBD may make chemotherapy more effective and increase cancer cell death without harming normal cells. Studies in mouse models of cancer showed that CBD together with delta-9-THC may make chemotherapy such as temozolomide more effective. “”snip”

Likely legalization vote prompts action on California’s medical marijuana industry
The California Highway Patrol would develop a way to determine when someone is too high to drive, while the Department of Public Health would come up with rules for testing pot products for potency and toxic chemicals and set limits on when individuals with felony convictions or newly arrived in California would be eligible for a license to grow, process, transport or sell medical marijuana.

The bill also would create training standards and labor rights for industry workers — a nod to unions — and preserve the right of local governments to ban cannabis businesses, which is key to maintaining support from the League of California Cities and police chiefs.

The same fighting civilization tooth and nail for decades, now feel the urge to regulate? Now, after torturing millions of US citizens, lying in court and in legislating. Now want a say in drafting regulations with no reality base? Piss testing drivers has been an ongoing goal, along with banning dispensaries where they interfere with Casino’s and Sport’s Bars. Such obvious disregard for the citizens and again appeasing the Police Chiefs, Lawyers and CHIPs.

The bills would regulate electronic cigarettes the same way regular smoking is restricted in public places, bar smoking on all school campuses, allow counties to seek voter approval of local tobacco taxes, and raise the smoking age from 18 to 21.

Here come the BUTT Probes. Just can’t sleep unless they’re prohibiting something for someone, always in the name of safety. Now more teens in Juvi for smoking as a way to deter them they cage them? More evictions from corporate and HUD housing. More sick from not dealing with the chemical adulterants added to the tobacco. The push to stop smoking, but only on their terms. Banning e-cigs that has been useful in getting people off of the chemically laden cigarettes. Again take the taxes and subsidize organic tobacco instead of in the politicians pockets. Can we ever have legislation the people can study before its law? Any law should have the peoples’ approval and not by fast tracking and deception.

    Using Pot To Save Brains!

Marijuana tourism is a budding industry
An early inkling of the commercial potential of marijuana tourism came on a day with a mythical significance for many marijuana users: April 20, 2014, when one travel booking site saw searches for Denver jump nearly 75% year-over-year months after recreational marijuana use was legalized in Colorado.

Is this enough in your face evidence to show how legalizing recreationally brings many business they would not have otherwise? The previous denialists trying to claim coincidence and the reefer mad hatters banning it, are losing business. Deserves them right. Any town banning cannabis accessibility should be cut off from state funding.

Is that what they concluded? Let’s go to the source and see. From the Arizona Child Fatality Review Program’s November 2014 Annual Report:

In Arizona, there is a clear link between substance use and a considerable number of child deaths where it is an associated, contributing or direct cause of the fatality. Because of this connection, it is important to identify those deaths related to substance use in order to understand how or if it connects to the incident and, if it does, how best to inform prevention and awareness efforts. Note: Although substance use is a known risk factor in child fatalities, it is important to remember the term associated is used because it is not always clear if or how the substance use had a direct or contributing effect on the fatality incident.

The CFR program defines substance use as associated with a child’s death if the child, the child’s parent, caretaker and/or if the person responsible for the death, during or about the time of the incident leading to the death, used or abused substances, including illegal drugs, prescription drugs, and/or alcohol.

  21. Servetus says:

A new drug politics exposé is the latest work by journalist Paul L. Williams. Williams’ book, “Operation Gladio: The Untold Story of the Unholy Alliance Between the Vatican, the CIA, and the Mafia ”, links the various agencies to anti-Soviet activities after World War II, activities financed by selling heroin in black ghettos in New York and the metropolitan D.C. area:

The story started as early as 1942 with the formation of the Vatican Bank. The same year ONI (Office of Naval Intelligence) recruited Lucky Luciano, a pre-eminent drug lord. The Swiss director of the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Allen Dulles came to the conclusion, “We’re fighting the wrong enemy.” Schutzstaffel (SS) sent Dulles a message through the Vatican that the Nazi government wanted to establish a separate peace with the United States; they wanted to fight the Soviets.[…]

Consequently, the US intelligence agencies got drug lord Lucky Luciano released from jail, allowed him to build his narcotic empire, and simply watched the flow of drugs into the largely black ghettos of New York and Washington. The unholy alliance of the American spies and criminals was replicated everywhere, from Laos and Burma to Marseilles and Panama. Dulles met Prince Max von Hohenlohe in Bern. Hohenlohe found Dulles in agreement with him. Later, Dulles also met other Nazi officials to forge the new alliance.[…]

This disturbing exposé describes a secret alliance forged at the close of World War II by the CIA, the Sicilian and US mafias, and the Vatican to thwart the possibility of a Communist invasion of Europe. Journalist Paul L. Williams presents evidence suggesting the existence of “stay-behind” units in many European countries consisting of five thousand to fifteen thousand military operatives. According to the author’s research, the initial funding for these guerilla armies came from the sale of large stocks of SS morphine that had been smuggled out of Germany and Italy and of bogus British bank notes that had been produced in concentration camps by skilled counterfeiters. As the Cold War intensified, the units were used not only to ward off possible invaders, but also to thwart the rise of left-wing movements in South America and NATO-based countries by terror attacks.[Emphasis added]

1942 predates the CIA’s cocaine/Contra connection by forty years. It also predates by several years the French government’s sales of Burmese heroin funding its colonial activities in Southeast Asia. Apparently, old habits die hard. Terror attacks carried out on leftists by the remnants of fascist political movements might not have been possible had it not been for the money from sales of illegal opiates. Given the opportunities for intrigue, it’s little wonder governments retain prohibition.

!5 years of controlling the valley where 90% of the world’s opium is produced and not one plant pulled,,not one trafficker busted,,not one bank fined for over a trillion dollars worth of opium money laundering in the last 15 years is “the rest of the story”.

Don’t you just love it when police officers accidentally make the case for drug legalisation?

Sen-Sgt Miles said it was easier for children to get their hands on drugs than alcohol or cigarettes.

“The reality is, the sale of liquor is regulated, while the access to dangerous drugs, no matter what form they’re in, is not,” he said. http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/drug-crisis-ice-access-easier-than-alcohol-townsville-police-say/story-fnihsrf2-1227496685169

Marijuana Does Not Affect Brain Volume Study Finds
Public health experts have cited concerns that using marijuana could be associated with structural changes in the brain. However, a new trial comparing the brains of marijuana users and non-users to their siblings reveals that marijuana use likely does not cause changes in brain volume.

$200 Million Collected In Marijuana Taxes

In Colorado, after about a year and a half of legal recreational marijuana sales, the state has collected more than $117 million in excise taxes from both the recreational and medical marijuana markets, according to the most recent data from the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Washington state got a slower start. Its retail shops didn’t begin selling recreational marijuana until July of last year, but they are keeping pace with Colorado’s. About $83 million in excise taxes have already been collected in the year since sales first began, according to the most recent tax data from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board.

The Scythians – High Plains Drifters
The Scythians played a very important part in the Ancient World from the seventh to first century BC. They were expert horsemen, and were one of the earliest peoples to master the art of riding and using horse-drawn covered wagons. This early high mobility is probably why most scholars credit them with the spread of cannabis knowledge throughout the ancient world. Indeed, the Scythian people travelled and settled extensively throughout Europe, the Mediterranean, Central Asia, and Russia, bringing their knowledge of the spiritual and practical uses for cannabis with them.

    BREAKING NEWS:
The DNC Cancels All Debates, Appoints Hillary Clinton the Democratic Nominee.
In a surprise move that caught the media by surprise, Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced today that the DNC was canceling the six as yet unscheduled Democratic primary debates and appointing Hillary Clinton the party’s nominee in the 2016 presidential election. “We thought long and hard about this,” said Wasserman Schultz. “It was not a decision that was hastily arrived at.”

With it being Florida, and Wasserface, the saboteur of Florida getting Cannabis. Add Clinton to the mix. Who knows?

I wouldn’t call this snark or satire, just a stupid ratings scam. Though it is listed as all of the above. Not at the story, except the tag list. I would also wonder the wisdom in having a site promoting legitimacy mixed with “snark” or “satire”. I don’t know much about kos, maybe they’re just like fox, for liberals. There are sites for that entertainment purpose.

I think of a snark as lacking credentials or experience and substituting with cruel or derogatory gotcha’s, and non professional. Whereas satire is a legitimate way of bringing truth through the absurdity of the issue. But only if you know its satire.

If dailykos.com even is journalism, or wants to be taken seriously. I’d cut the BS when a lot of people believe the fear mongering on both sides. The circus and the fear giving the media and advertisers a billion dollars profit is closer to the truth of the elections. So I’m still not sure about this story since it was posted in several categories. Lazy staff? Or if the writer is just not good enough to entertain as a real Satirist.

We’ll end up with another shithead no doubt, but doesn’t it make ya all warm and fuzzy knowing the media and advertisers will get the billion dollars spent on the circus?
