Caravan under way

Nice to see the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity getting some early press. Hopefully that will grow even more (as will the crowds).

At first, when looking at their itinerary, I was about to take bets on how often they’d get pulled over and searched, but they may have enough of an entourage and public presence to get the police to stay off them.

    Found this on MedicalXpress today.

High potency and synthetic marijuana pose real dangers in first weeks of pregnancy

Marijuana is up to 20 times more potent than it was 40 years ago and most pregnant women who use the drug are totally unaware that it could harm their unborn child before they even know they are pregnant.

Writing in the journal Drug Testing and Analysis, American researcher’s state the argument that marijuana is a harmless drug is no longer valid due to the emergence of ‘high potency’ marijuana and synthetic marijuana which pose a potential real threat for pregnant women.

They also express concerns that marijuana’s increased popularity among teenagers and young adults could put this group at higher risk.

“The emergence of bioengineered crops and novel, medicinal marijuana strains, means that marijuana is no longer what it used to be in the 1970’s and early 1980s’: some new, high potency strains, including some medicinal marijuana blends such as ‘Connie Chung’ and many others, contain up to 20 times more THC, the psychoactive constituent of marijuana, than did ‘traditional’ marijuana from the 1970’s and early 1980’s ” explains co-author Dr. Delphine Psychoyos from the Center for Genetic and Environmental Medicine at Texas A&M University. “Furthermore, with the emergence of dispensaries and Internet websites, high potency marijuana and Spice products are now readily available to the general population.” /snip/

“The THC contained in ‘high potency’ marijuana and the potent THC analogues contained in Spice products and other brands of ‘synthetic marijuana’, are potentially harmful to embryonic development, as early as two weeks after conception. This is because these psychoactive chemicals have the ability to interfere with the first stages in the formation of the brain of the fetus; this event occurs two weeks after conception, earlier than before signs of pregnancy appear. By the time a woman realises she is pregnant and stops taking these substances it may already be too late for her unborn child.”

    Et cetera.

Sounds kinda desperate, don’t you think?

P.S. Sorry for OT, best of success to the Drug Peace Caravan!

Ugh. No way to publicly respond. There is feedback to the editors, but this piece is so bad, and so full of inaccuracies, that I’m sure the Ed. intended it that way. It’s too full of half truths and outright lies to have been simply badly researched.
I don’t waste my time responding to individual prohibitionists. I prefer to shred them right out where everybody can see.

Well it sure looks like the prohibitionists are pulling out all the stops and going all the way in promoting reefer madness this year using all of the standard issue hysterical rhetoric. Recently the operators of a Denver dispensary were charged with selling out the back door to people in other States with the claim that the medicinal cannabis vendors have become “major” suppliers in other States. What is a major supplier to these people? An operation which they claim is responsible for selling something over 100 lbs of cannabis. Forget those 30 and 40 ton busts at or near the Mexican border, these guys have flooded the Country with more than two pounds per State.

I’m halfway expecting a new study that demonstrates that pot makes guys grow man teats.

Here’s a link to a meta study which contradicts the claims of the study noted above:

I think that was already tried and died,,but like Reefer Madness,,it will rise again.

Since thc is non-toxic,,the increase of thc in the plant shouldn’t be anymore toxic today than it was 20 to 5000 years ago.

It never even occurred to me that police might harass them. I hope they don’t.

    • darkcycle says:

I guess they’ve been left alone so far. Good thing, because from the pictures, they’ve been having quite a lot of “fun” along the way.

Been following the caravan since it started. One of my facebook friends is the MagoMan, he’s part of the crew. Unfortunately they started in Texas (at the border) and will be heading East. No chance too see them here.

” I was about to take bets on how often they’d get pulled over and searched,”

My thoughts exactly. There is a rule in American law enforcement (apparently):

Never let an opportunity to stomp an innocent, unarmed, defenseless citizen’s face go to waste. Even more so when there is the possibility of asset seizures because trace amounts of pot may be present.

The police are watching them, just waiting for the right opportunity – usually the middle of the night, with no crowds around. For our “protection”, you understand.

  6. darkcycle says:

Having Javier Sicilia along may be affording some protection.

  7. claygooding says:

I don’t think the police will touch them,,they don’t want to “help” them by making news.

Plus, I think the Caravan volunteers are probably too smart to be holding when they know they will be under the kind of scrutiny they will get on this trip.

I’m so surprised they have even been allowed to do this. I’m surprised the government allowed them in the country to do this. I hope no one tries to set them up or plant anything on them. This, I think, is that big march everyone has wanted to have for so many years. It’s going to DC, too. Please. Everyone that can possibly manage it… do it. Join them. Make this effort speak very loudly. I’d like to see millions of people joining them for the march into Washington, D. C..

People have for years wanted a big rally, a big, huge showing, a march into D. C.. I think this may be it.

      • darkcycle says:

Good, at least YOU haven’t seen the pictures posted by MagoMan on FB yesterday….whew!
        😉

        • Hope says:

Well, I hope that man doesn’t do the effort harm. It wouldn’t be the first time some party hearty intellect messed up something important.

        • darkcycle says:

Not the man. He’s a savvy old crust, like a lot of our couchmates.
