Tuesday thread

I’m having way too much fun in New York right now seeing good shows, eating good food, leading good walking tours (along with an amazing single-malt tasting session tonight) to possibly keep up with reading and commenting on drug war news.

But you need another open thread, so here it is.

    Thanks Pete!

Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess, a former police officer and head of the council’s public safety committee, has come out in favor of legalizing marijuana.

Burgess is another on list of city officials in favor of pot legalization, including City Attorney Pete Holmes and Mayor Mike McGinn.

“I don’t favor legalization because I want to use marijuana, far from it,” Burgess wrote on his City View blog. “Frankly, I’ve seen too many ruined lives because of abusive and excessive use of drugs and alcohol, including marijuana.

“I favor legalization because I want to see a more rational, predictable and cost-effective approach to drugs and crime.” ..

.. “To continue on our present course of mass incarceration,” Burgess said, “means we will continue to create a class of people who have great difficulty functioning in society and for whom we will pay the price in high prison costs, high recidivism rates, and high poverty.”

Excellent malcolm, thanks. There’s a great deal of Legalize energy going on in Washington state and I’m going to stay on top of it as best I can. Participation while the action is in motion is an imperative now.

Thought about you yesterday malcolm when I put a comment in the Seattle Times. Appreciate you.

Thanks Denmark for your kind words!

So I may look out for you and return the compliment, what name do you usually post under on comment threads?

I was thinking today that activists will have to stay on their toes after cannabis is legalized so the Prohibitionist’s don’t screw things up.

  2. Peter says:

Just been reading Keith Richards _Life_ and thinking about how this all fits in with the wod. Quite apart from the obvious irritations of a man who seems never to have grown out of teenage impressionability with all things cool, especially drugs, the most striking thing is a complete obliviousness to the contrast in the way he is treated by authorities, and the way, for example, poor black men (“cats” in richards’ parlance)are dealt with. His overweening self-importance takes it as a law of nature that he will be immune to the actions of drug warriors due to wealth, hero-worship and expensive lawyers, and this all adds to his super-hero aura of cool– look! He’s bullet-proof! Fooling the authorities is all a great game for richards. He is obviously not the sharpest knife in the drawer and has no sense of introspection, but if he had, he might look at his own position as the binary opposite of the nixons, reagans, kerlikowskis etc in the wod. They need him to continue in his role as crazy druggie to justify their oppression of the less powerful, people of color, immigrants etc. I would say he is a beneficiary of the wod, as it has enhanced his rebel reputation with the gullible, while allowing them to forget the millions who have been less fortunate than richards and had their lives destroyed by all aspects of prohibition.

Dispensaries throw their extra medicine away? Why am I skeptical? Motor oil, not hash oil, right? They actually want motor oil going to the landfill? Around here we get bent over and spanked by the county if they catch us sending motor oil to the landfill.

I thought trash was abandoned. How can you steal something that’s abandoned? Didn’t the SCOTUS declare trash legally abandoned so not worthy of 4th Amendment protection?

“Julie Postlethwait of the state’s medical marijuana enforcement agency said proposed rules would require marijuana debris to be ground up and mixed with non-edible materials, such as oil, to deter thefts.”

    http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2011/03/08/Thieves-target-medical-marijuana-trash-bin/UPI-26191299574800/

    • darkcycle says:

I bet they were dumping their discarded water leaves right into the trash. That’s a cavalier faux pas that would send your average black market grower straight to the poky. And this woman wants this biodegradable debris mixed with MOTOR OIL to somehow render it….what….SAFE?! I’m sure it wouldn’t matter if you pointed out that the stuff was “safe” before being adulterated, and after adulteration, is toxic and poisonous, and doesn’t biodegrade (in any quick or clean way). No. “Safe” gots nothin to do with it. It’s hysteria.
But in some cases it is better to humor a hysterical person, rather than deliver the ‘Bogart’ slap in the face, as satisfying as that might be. So it would probably behoove the legal grower to NOT discard his or her waste leaves where teenagers can easily find them. The age old solutions are burning or on-site composting.

      • darkcycle says:

P.S. I think it’s Jef-tek, a grower, tells a story of another closet grower who did just that. He dumped his waste into the dumpster in the alley behind his house. When his entire 130 day cycle was over and the grow was down to await another crop, he got a knock on his door. It was the local street people who had been smoking his water leaves now for three months asking for more! “Say, you aren’t gonna throw out some more of that good leaf today are you? we’re out!”

      • Duncan20903 says:

Jeez DC aren’t you aware that you can make extracts from every bit of the plant? I can take leftover stems and with some grain alcohol make extracts that will knock your socks off. There’s no grade of smoking cannabis that can deliver results as good as extracts from what most see as trash. Roots are the only part of the plant that I see as unusable beyond their purpose of osmosis.

Some days I mourn all the “useless” leaves and stems that I’ve relegated to the compost heap in the past. My regrets right up there with tossing out all those Panama Red seeds back in 1983. Wise men fear to tread where ignorance is bliss, indeed.

    • darkcycle says:

Duncan, you are totally correct. Some people are wasteful, and some don’t know. If you have some types of pest issues (virus), you have to discard. And still others produce too much to deal with that themselves. I compost my water leaves because I have space and time issues that would otherwise cause it to pile up to ridiculous levels, and then there’s that pesky weight limit for dried material.
Harvest trim, that’s easy. The detritus that piles up on a daily basis is a different matter. Plus I…er…uh…some use a perpetual harvest method that makes for a constant, unending stream of debris. It doesn’t work in EVERY case to use all of your waste. You want my water leaves? They’re yours. I’ll need to see your valid Washington ID and your physician’s recommendation.

    • darkcycle says:

Besides, they took the toluene out of airplane glue something like ten years ago now, and replaced it with an aromatic less conducive to huffing. Most serious huffers are into spray paint anyway. The only more efficient way to kill brain cells comes in calibres, .38, .357, 9mm etc.

    More from President Calderon:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/03/03/AR2011030305672.html

For me, it’s very difficult to prosecute a very poor farmer in Mexico growing marijuana,” he said, when “industrial”-scale agriculture is flourishing north of the border. “How can I console our widows” – Mexico has lost more than 2,000 police and federal agents the past four years fighting the drug cartels – “and at the same time students in universities can smoke pot with no problems?

and in the next breath, behold:

He said he worried about the increased consumption among young people that he believes would inevitably follow [legalization] – we could lose “several generations”

President Calderon can see that America is establishing its cannabis industry, but will continue to decimate Mexico’s (and accept US dollars to do so). He’s a bit sorry for the widows though.

He’s also is worried about maybe losing several generations to drugs which is apparently different to losing several generations to drugs (right now) and perhaps the entire country as a result of prohibition caused drug violence.

But whod’a thunk that would extend to a campaign to encourage people to stop using such words. It seems that now the politically correct are eating their own.

BOSTON — It appears that the flu is to blame for causing the White House drug czar to faint twice on a visit to Massachusetts.

Drug Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske fell ill and fainted at about 2 p.m. Tuesday while speaking to law students at Harvard University, a spokesman said. Emergency workers treated Kerlikowske at the scene and took him to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was evaluated and released.

Kerlikowske, 61, fainted again at about 6 p.m. at Logan International Airport while on his way back to Washington, D.C.
      ——-
We’ve had three different type of flu strains circulating around our state. No sympathy droopy.

  13. darkcycle says:

Our Drug Czar collapsed twice in Boston? Oh my. I do hope he’s not seriously ill. That would be dreadful. Many painful and dreadful illnesses have no effective pharmaceutical remedy, you know, and no effective treatment for the symptoms of stuff like M.S., and ALS is pending, either.
Too bad marijuana isn’t effective for these things. It has no legitimate medical use, you know. (snark ends now) One irony is that he CAN’T seek relief with medical marijuana, he ruled it out by taking that position as drug czar.

    • denmark says:

Can’t write down what I really want to say about droopy being ill.

Look this is just my opinion,FDA completely discontinued a very good Migraine med and its generics with very few side effects, that folks had liked and had used for years.
The med was called Midrin I have been on it only for about three months I have much stronger stuff I also use for headaches but never had any problems with Midrins generic.
According to reports there was shortage of chemicals to make Midrin also it was first made and marketed before current FDA Aproval process was in place,so what did that disqualify it, doubt it, they could have granfathered it in. it been in use for 20 to 40 years I think, no its cause they need new drugs with new patents to charge you more for prescriptions pure greed from pharmaceutical companies.
Many folks on forums say other meds just have a lot of side effect that Midrin did not.
    http://www.helpforheadaches.com/articles/2010/Discontinued-Migraine-Medications.htm

And you wonder why everyday more people are trying,Medical Marijuana more,Yeah cause those Idiots over at FDA keep taking more meds away from people, did they not also retire 500 cold meds I’m sure not all of those needed to be discontiued either.

    • darkcycle says:

No, V.V. You’re right. These effective and proven medications were removed from the shelves to drive patients to new, expensive and unproven drugs. No other reason.

When did the cannabis induced munchies get expanded to pot makes the people who enjoy it fat? I swear I’ve never heard that one except on random occasions in passing before this year. Now it’s actually popping up on lists of why we can’t re-legalize, because America is obese and “we don’t need to add to the problem.” OK, it’s not like it’s that far a stretch, I think everyone does pick up a few pounds the first year but then people learn to either use healthy foods to satisfy the munchies or to just ignore the cravings and they go away. I even knew one enormous fellow who lost almost 200 lbs, stoned every day of his weight loss period. Anyway, I find this one annoying.

So furthering this meme, in today’s “news” George Michael has lost 15 lbs because he quit cannabis. He swears he has. Now if he really has quit the pot club it gives me a warm fuzzy. But christ on a crutch, Mr. Michael couldn’t get his hands on some “diet” meds if he wanted? Meth and coke do that trick with no problem.

I seethe inside wanting to yell at them. Do you know when I love to exercise, to dance, to MOVE? It’s when I’ve smoked just a little bit. Just enough. Why? Because I bloody well can’t feel the day to day pain. I actually feel like I AM my body, in sync with it, rather then a passenger stuck inside a creaking, rust bucket of a ship, hindered by it. And afterward, I actually feel less pain when compared to a work out without smoking. But it’s been ages since I had that pleasure. Oi I miss it.
