bullet image Michael Savage on marijuana. [Obligatory keep-things-that-can-break-away-from-you warning]

I got about halfway through it.

bullet image Kay Lazar of the Boston Globe does a strange and incomprehensible hit piece on marijuana: As Pot-Smoking, Pill-Popping Baby Boomers Age, New Health Problems May Arise.

It’s an entire feature article with absolutely no facts. A lot of random unfocused speculation that pot and “other drugs” (I love the way they lump them together to make wild speculations) will cause some heretofore unknown dangerous effect on an entire generation, that tons of old people will overwhelm treatment centers because of their pot addictions, and that doctors will misdiagnose pot’s short term memory effects as dementia. Complete with “experts” saying absolutely nothing.

“We need to help [patients] to either cut down or stop use earlier,” Delany said, “so we will have fewer problems when they’re older and it is more expensive to treat them.”

Treat what? The munchies?

bullet image Check out this headline in the Vancouver Sun: Marijuana Does Nothing To Help Memory In Alzheimer’s: Study

And the lede re-emphasizes the point:

Marijuana does not appear to improve memory or reverse effects of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a University of B.C. study…

That’s too bad. When there had been some preliminary evidence that marijuana might have some potential in treating Alzheimer’s, it sounded pretty exciting, and I was hoping there would be some more research to determine if it was true. But I guess this is just one of those things that doesn’t pan out. They obviously did a thorough study that proved that marijuana doesn’t have any value to human Alzheimer patients.

Let’s check it out. How many Alzheimer’s patients were involved in the study?

Six researchers affiliated with the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute used a synthetic derivative of cannabis called HU210, which is 100 to 800 times more potent than marijuana consumed by humans.

In experiments, mice were initially taught how to get to a desired location in a maze.

The mice that got high dose HU210 did no better than control subject mice, which got no drug, or those that got a low dose.

The study was done on a total of nearly 100 mice — a third that got a high-dose drug injection, a third that got a lower dose and a control group that didn’t get the drug but still had a sham injection to produce the same conditions. […]

After the experiments, mice were killed and their brains were examined. Post-mortems showed mice that got the highest dose of the drug had fewer brain cells, pointing to a detrimental effect of marijuana. [emphasis added]

Well, that certainly cleared that up. If you’re a mouse attempting to navigate a maze, don’t bother injecting yourself with a massive dose of HU210. It’s probably not going to help you.

And they’ll still remove your brain.

I would love to debate Michael Savage.

  2. Just me says:

Well crap if you use 800 times the potency of anything…even air..your likely to have adverse eefcts from it…WTF !!!

  3. Just me says:

SAVAGE>>GET A F#@KING CLUE!!! Cannabis donent lead to hard drugs…prohibition leads to drugdealers that sell hard drugs DUMBASS!! Oh crap…just broke my key board !!

  4. Shap says:

I guess Savage must think that his younger self should have been thrown in prison for smoking marijuana. What a fucking hypocrite. I usually find him pretty entertaining but what a bunch of reefer madness bullshit. Not much bothers me more than when these weak sole addicts get on TV or radio and talk about how marijuana or some other drug destroyed their lives and this is why these drugs should be illegal. As if we have to govern in order to save this minority of Americans from screwing up their own lives because they are irresponsible and unable to control themselves. They should have absolutely no voice in this debate whatsoever. Would be like people buried under hundreds of thousands of dollars in consumer debt telling everyone else that credit cards should be illegal. Ridiculous.

Don’t forget about “a form a liberalism that was dangerous for you,” much worse then heroin, crack, mushrooms, and sexual abandonment.

  6. Dale says:

Sounds like he was using way too much in college. Of course, I’m sure some of the people reading this use way too much also by that definition, but the thing is, you can easily modulate your use if it becomes a problem. Nowadays I only smoke occasionally, and then just a few puffs off of a pipe. It’s relaxing and it’s not addictive unless you already have an addictive personality.

  7. Ed Dunkle says:

It would be disturbing if Michael Weiner was pro-freedom. It’s nice to know that he’s wrong about pretty much everything.

Regarding Kay Lazar, she doesn’t mention the flip side: current geriatrics who are so terrified of drugs that they won’t take prescribed medicine. Thanks for keeping the populace terrified, Kay.

  8. Duncan says:

It seems that the fact that they used genetically altered mice with human DNA spliced in for the study was missed entirely. Synthetic cannabinoids were tested on synthetic creatures. It’s just amazing what scientists are doing nowadays. How’s the weather up in that ivory tower doc?

—(“The new study, led by Dr. Weihong Song, Canada Research Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease and a professor of psychiatry in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, was the first to test those findings using mice carrying human genetic mutations that cause Alzheimer’s disease — widely considered to be a more accurate model for the disease in humans.”)—

  10. strayan says:

Whilst I disagree with that Savage guys method of deterring people from smoking and using drugs, I’m sure it helps some people quit.

What Savage clearly fails to grasp, however, is that regulating the illicit drug market (legalisation) is the best way to achieve that goal (and deter people from using drugs).

Pack warnings, sales tax, product information (drug interaction warnings, side-effects, ingredients information) and age restrictions are impossible to administer unless the product is legal and available on prescription or from licensed outlets. You only need to look at the success the tobacco control people have had to see what that the long term out come of legalisation will be a dramatic fall in consumption. Ironically, this is exactly what Savage wants.

Sabage is a whiny moron, good tool to have on our side. As long as you don’t have to hear or see it. Such vile trash should have a biohazard warning for newbies. I know better. Toke-A-Day May Keep Old Memory Functioning
The more research they do, the more evidence Ohio State University scientists find that specific elements of marijuana can be good for the aging brain by reducing inflammation there and possibly even stimulating the formation of new brain cells.

    Alzheimer’s Research Mar 14, 2008
It’s good news for Terry Pratchett, Britain’s highest-profile Alzheimer’s sufferer. Alzheimer’s syndrome is a disease of old age that could lie in wait for any of us and sometimes ambushes those who think of themselves as merely middle aged. Terry Pratchett is 59. The good news is that research is showing that cannabis slows down memory loss. The recent report from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has involved mice, but is now moving towards human trials.

The government’s of both countries are digging deep into the realm of imagination, trying to find anything that will keep marijuana illegal. And the prohibitionists are too.
Why do these people keep coming to a gunfight with a pocket knife?
I wonder how much that ridiculous study cost. They could have probably used the same money to feed school children breakfast for a year or two with that.
Does anyone remember any study that showed “possible” harm form marijuana where they used marijuana on the subjects?

  13. claygooding says:

Micheal Savage works for the cartels. He is a fool, and I don’t take calling someone a fool lightly.

  14. ezrydn says:

From Savage’s own mouth, “Marijuana ruined my way of critical thinking.” And he’s never got it back! So, I wonder why anyone would listen to a self-proclaimed “ruined thinker?” He should go with me when I have my Exec. Physical. When he talked about THC remaining in the body, I wondered if he thought batteries would still work once they’re depleted?

Savage is just another “do as I say, not as I do” type. If today, he feels his youthful transgressions were so bad, why doesn’t he go lite up a number on the steps of the local PD and make retribution for his crimes against humanity?

I do have to agree with him on one point through. All elected officials, those who brought us the pee test, should be tested randomly, every month they’re in office. I could get behind that sort of legislation that we all know we’ll never see.

WATCH OUT FOR THE “GREEN TEAM” CANADA

    British Columbia

    Mounties Encounter More Sophisticated Grow-Ops

Marijuana is one of the largest funding sources to organized crime, according to an expert in the drug trade in B.C.

As many as 10,000 marijuna-growing operations can thrive on any given day in B.C. and criminals will go to great lengths to hide them.

In Nanaimo, a specialty team of police officers come together to focus solely on stopping marijuana production.

Nicknamed the ‘Green Team’, the group works undercover to target growers and their pot crops. The secretive squad does not disclose its surveillance methods, identities, how often it rolls out or even how many officers are on the team.

But it recently wrapped a significant four-month stint, culminating with its biggest raid of underground urban drug bunkers as they swarmed five properties in one day in Nanaimo last month.

As criminals have become more sophisticated in their quest to hide weed, police say they too have also gotten better at detecting the drugs, although they will not reveal how.

Since October, the Green Team has searched 21 properties, seized more than 5,000 pot plants, 10 firearms and $50,000 in cash. And they are not done yet.

    GREEN TEAM STATS

From October until mid-January, the team has:

    – – Searched 21 properties ( including two assisting Ladysmith and Oceanside detachments )

    – – Seized more than 5,000 pot plants

    – – Seized more than 10 firearms, plus ammunition

    – – Seized more than $50,000 in cash.

    – – Twenty people are being investigated or have been charged with offences in connection with those raids.

Keep in mind that this guy was banned from the UK due to his hatred for Muslims. He is a lunatic and he says crazy shit just to get attention.
If he doesn’t like marijuana he shouldn’t smoke it.
But ‘the most dangerous of all drugs’??? Maybe he is high.

  17. Tim says:

Wow, Michael Savage. Hey prohibitionists: with friends like these…

  18. Chris says:

Callers for that radio program were from ann arbor and san fransisco, and they were against it? For every one of them, there were probably 15 callers trying to get in and say the guy was an idiot and got filtered out.

  19. Chris says:

Also, near the end he said that today’s marijuana is as powerful as LSD. Hahaha.

  20. Cliff says:

Micheal Savage is a mean-spirited, angry, bitter person who does not deserve any respect as a broadcaster. He is the same as all the prohibistas, spouting hate with no alternatives to the current situation with the War on Certain Drugs.

He seems like the type of guy who would masterbate while watching someone get beaten and tortured because that person possessed a certain type of plant.

  21. Alex B. says:

  22. Ethics says:

I only lasted 3minutes on that video.

Alex B, i’m the same read the news and keep current with the world and local affairs from all sides of the media spectrum. Oh wait no i can’t do that, i’m 21 i’ve been brainwashed by Hollywood thinkin marijuana is the coolest! No free thinking involved. I saw it in a movie once and i just had to try it.

It’s great how we can be brainwashed by the media, yet be overly liberal compared to any mainstream media outlets or societal norms. Brainwashed yet the ones most open to alternative ways of thinking such as NOT believing the tripe they peddle on the news.

Good job getting halfway through Savage’s video, Pete. I got 2:27.

  26. Servetus says:

I listened to the whole thing, but to do it I had to alter my state of consciousness.

There’s a pathology to Michael Savage’s discourse that is always fascinating. In this episode, Savage pushes a Nixon-style redux that pins marijuana on liberals, an act of voodoo designed to transfer all the imaginary evils of marijuana onto Michael’s political enemies. Like most voodoo, it only works if you’re superstitious.

  27. Nick says:

    Great post Pete.
One of the most interesting aspect about giving mice something “which is 100 to 800 times more potent than marijuana consumed by humans” is that none of the mice died. (From natural causes at least).
    Thanks again.

  28. truthtechnician says:

Wait…didn’t anyone catch this? A SYNTHETIC version of marijuana? Something some scumbag pharmaceutical company can PATENT?

And they still can’t get it right.

Why make it 800 times as strong? No wonder the frickin’ mice couldn’t solve the maze…they were jonesing for munchies.
