Colorado and the Presidential Race

This AP story has been getting a lot of play around the media: Colo. vote on pot could affect Obama-Romney race

Whether to legalize marijuana will be on the Colorado ballot in November. President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney have identical stances on pot legalization — they oppose it. And neither is comfortable talking about it.

Yet Obama and Romney find themselves unwittingly ensnared in the legalization debate — and both may want to take it more seriously if their race in Colorado is close.

Again, it’s good to see this on the national stage this year. Even when both candidates don’t want to talk about it, they can’t avoid it.

And one thing the article didn’t discuss… How will they avoid talking about it, if a Gary Johnson, for example, starts spending some time in Colorado talking about legalization?

They’re getting boxed in, slowly but surely. They don’t want to talk about it? Tough. Sooner or later, they’ll have to. And that’s when all the gloves – and the smiley masks hiding the fascism – come off.

In Romney’s case, the Paul people are stealthily collecting up the delegates to the Republican convention, and that has gotten the Repub Establishment types sweating bullets. They’ve tried to ignore the not-so-silent upwelling of Paul’s support within the Republican ranks, and it’s not working. They’ve even used police to disrupt a lawful assembly and proper voting in of his delegates. That’s how worried they’re becoming.

As for Obama, he’s lost millions of cannabists’s votes, and they are NOT coming back. Ever. Trying to scare people (“The Romney’s coming! The ROMNEY’S coming!! THE ROMNEY’S COMING!!!) who’ve been on the short, sharp and sh*tty end of the stick held by both(?) Parties FOR THE PAST 40 EFFIN’ YEARS doesn’t faze us.

(And I don’t mind telling you that I relish pointing this out every time I see some DLC shill trying to scare reformers with how bad Romney will be. We’re already in the civil rights hell-hole they’re so pee-their-pants terrified of the rest of the country falling into. No biggie for us. And, as I often point out to such shills, maybe the country needs a good swift kick to the arse to start taking civil liberties seriously…everyone’s civil liberties, not just those of the people they like.)

So…the issue will rear its’ head, and as much as they try to twist and turn, it will still be a stumbling block for them, one they will have to deal with.

As I said in one comment, its’ Russian Roulette time, vis-a-vis drug prohibition. Let’s see who pulls the trigger first…

I was thinking of good domain names to push Obama and Romney conversation on this issue and stumbled upon this: http://www.timetotalk.org

Lets see the govt wants parents to talk to their kids about drugs but mention marijuana and Obama/Romney cover their ears and run away.

The Johnson/Gray ticket,if we can get the percentage of backers in the polls, will inject legalization discussion into every state’s political debates now, right where we need them.

Even if some of our advocates could act like they support Johnson it will throw the debate right in their faces and laughing it off will not be an option.

Watch the Republican convention in August. Should be interesting when they face the fact; Romney can’t win against Obama. Paul can.

  5. darkcycle says:

AS far as who wins, Rombama or Obomney it won’t make a whit of difference. We will not be able to tell a Romney first term from and Obushma second term, like Obama and Bush, you couldn’t fit a playing card between their two positions. AFA who wins? Really, who the fuck cares and what difference will it make? No one and none at all
No, like the Kap’n says, the interesting part of this election season will be how they handle the fact that there’s an elephant in the room. See, the room is getting smaller, the Elephant is getting bigger and they have a full dance card. We can only hope that they blunder into that Pachyderm early and often.

They’ll go with the modified ad hominem, and say a vote for Mr. Johnson is a “wasted” vote. (get it? wasted, hehehehehe, they’re all wasted!)

sad news… Ray Bradbury has left the building.

“Ask for no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal. And if there were, it would be related to the great sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day every day, sleeping its life away.”

    • Duncan20903 says:

OK, I’m dying to know…did he opt for cremation or not? Perhaps a funeral pyre fueled by second hand books?

    • Windy says:

Bradbury was my least favorite Science Fiction writer, but I am sorry to see he is no longer with us. I read many of his books when I was very young (pre-teen and teen), I didn’t like most of them, The Illustrated Man creeped me out and the Martian Chronicles was only slightly less disturbing. I preferred Asimov, Dick, Norton, Herbert, Heinlein, MZB and so many others, too many to list.

The main problem seems to be getting the message through the thickened skulls into the fat heads of the general public that legalization doesn’t require approval of use, or allowing the sales reps from the heroin factory to set up promotional displays to hand out free samples in the lobbies of America’s elementary schools.

Somebody please figure out the solution. It’s beyond my ken. I’d think it easier trying to figure out how to convince the squirrels that I’ve no interest in eating squirrel meat. At least those little fellers have some level of deductive reasoning. I sure can’t blame them for worrying about being dinner when so many would think them yummy. It must really suck being closer to the bottom of the food chain than the top.

      • claygooding says:

I can’t get them too understand that legalized and mandatory are not synonymous.

Oh fer Crap sake…FINALLY somebody shows me how to do that. Thanks Allan.

      indeed, indeed…

when I moved to Oregon at the start of the ’90s I was lucky enough to work at a quaint old threatened 30,000 acre ancient forest w/ an old mining camp in the middle of it. The place is Opal Creek and the old mining camp is Jawbone Flats. My co-miner Tincup (RIP amigo) and I used to speak our own language, just a few “words” but the language we called Jawbonese. People would look… quizzical expressions “Japanese?” they’d ask. No… Jawbonese… it was great fun. If hikers/backpackers were getting the “save the old growth” schpiel and went to use the outhouse we’d place as many rocks in their bags as we could w/o being obnoxious (or getting caught).

Now… what does that have to do w/ drug policy or shortening long URLS?

      Not a thing.

Even more fun than the rocks in the bag gag? Playing catch w/ the nitro bottle in the dynamite room… it would make people real nervous real fast. If we liked ’em we’d tell ’em later it was just water.

My first year there I never spoke to the USFS if they drove thru, my job was just to stare and scowl. Great practice for dealing with Prohibitionists…

      • darkcycle says:

Oh yeah. Catch with the nitro bottle. Good one. Next time you’re out with a tenderfoot try this one. Throw a handful of 12 gauge shotgun shells in the campfire and watch the rookies scatter. The shells just melt, the powder just burns and sometime later the primer will let loose with a “pop”. Great fora laugh.

The drivers of trains carrying liquid sodium cyanide have a habit of freaking out their new ‘second man’ by secretly spilling bitter almond oil in the cab – the facial expression of a person who thinks he has just a few seconds left to live can be rather interesting. So I’m told 🙂

Practice grenades…when you weren’t doing the real thing, like blowing up old IBM AT computers by wrapping PETN det cord around them. “Fire in the hole!” Good, clean fun.

        Ah, my misspent military youth…
