It’s bad enough having to pay hospital bills when you’re sick

This one’s from last week, but I couldn’t resist passing it on…

A Las Cruces woman has been charged $1,122 by a local hospital for a forcible body cavity search ordered by the Metro Narcotics Agency that did not turn up any illegal substances.

That has to be one of the most surreal sentences ever written.

When it comes to producing surreal experiences, “drugs” can’t hold a candle to the War on Drugs.

If the cavity search was performed at the demand of the police,,,then the police should be paying for it.

What? $1,122 for a body cavity search and no one thought to shave off all her head and body hair to look for witches’ marks? I’m appalled at the inefficiency of the Las Cruces Metro Narcotics Agency.

Wow, how much would that bill have been if Memorial Medical Center weren’t a “non-profit” business?

Well fair is fair, they paid the bill. They didn’t even insist on a court order nor even a self serving press release. Now that’s remarkable.

What’s next, a Congressman from Tennessee demanding that the cannabis laws be re-thought?

“Cohen is the first Jew to represent Tennessee in Congress, as well as the first white Democrat to represent a significant portion of Memphis since freshman George Grider was defeated by Republican Dan Kuykendall in 1966, and the first Jew to represent a majority black district,[5] as well as one of the few white congressmen that has represented a black-majority district

How come I never have a bet down when stuff like that happens? Oh right, cause I actually don’t ever gamble, just talk about it. Never mind.

Left this post RE the article linked above:
..Gasp…you mean the incentives of the black market corrupted those incorruptible bastions of our society? And that….I’m swooning…. agents of the Department of Homeland Security used their positions as the mighty and infallible shield of the state against Terrorism to facilitate SMUGGLING? I’m aghast… I’m sputterring…I’m ….not surprised in the frigging least.
Until the incentives of the black market are eliminated by a legalization and regulation scheme for ALL drugs, this is just one more piece of evidence that prohibition will never and can never succeed in eliminating drugs from our (or any ) society.

Damn I’m glad I had the foresight to wear my hip boots. L.L. Bean is a demigod.

Hey, I’ve been reading all over the place that Purdue Farmer Sue Tickles made Oxycontin impossible to use to get high! Why the heck are people smuggling it, and who cares if it doesn’t get people high?

I have heard that as well. I don’t see how you can separate the analgesic properties from the intoxicating properties of an opioid medication. Remember that Heroin was developed to treat morphine addiction and was initially marketed as non-addicting. Same with several other Opium derivatives and synthetics. All of them without exception turned out to be as addicting, or more addicting than the morphine they were supposed to supplant.
I don’t buy it…sounds like marketing trying to get out ahead of any potential rescheduling.

Wait….just speculating…they may have reformulated it so it cannot be crushed and snorted. It could be possible to use coating technology to encase the drug in an acid-sensitive antagonist. In the acid environment of the stomach the antagonist would be rendered ineffective, then the timed release medication could do it’s job without interference in the duodenum and intestine. They already time release coat the damn things about four times, it would be a small feat to accomplish.
