Commenting on Illinois legalization

So, the local paper is aware that I’ve been pretty active in drug policy reform and decided to interview me (and others) about the new legalization of marijuana in Illinois.

In today’s Pantagraph, Marijuana legalization proponents, opponents look to future

Not bad, overall, although comments were shortened and sometimes lost context (it was an hour interview), and I’m a bit disappointed that nothing was included about the social justice parts of the new law (expungements, and helping those communities that had been disproportionately affected by the drug war).

A few opponents were also interviewed. The ones from the health care systems were relatively reasonable – concerned about future potential treatment needs, but not taking a major stand on legalization. But we had a real spouting of the old reefer madness from Paul Pederson – president of the Illinois State Medical Society — a lot of mixing correlations with causation, and a complete lack of any kind of preparedness from looking at the vast number of studies that exist, and the results in states where legalization has occurred.

The ominous part is that this isn’t the first time scientists have discovered that THC shrinks tumors. In 1974 researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institute of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice — lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia.

The DEA quickly shut down the Virginia study and all further cannabis/tumor research. In 1976 President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies.

Oh, the irony. Young Mr. Lopez has no understanding of history; it was the self-identified ‘progressives’ of the first 2 decades of the last century who initiated drug prohibition.

And for the exact same reasons he espouses. Namely, that his (and his fellow progressives) tacitly assumed degree of moral and intellectual superiority makes them the perfect arbiters of public deportment. Of course they’re better about living your life than you do. And will do everything in their power to ‘help’ you, even if their ‘help’ kills you.

CS Lewis had them pegged, long ago:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Illinois appears less concerned about legalized marijuana and more concerned about dealing with gambling addictions, evidence Illinois may have its priorities in order. Curing gambling addictions sounds like a worthy effort. It was just funded by the Illinois legislature which gambled $6.8 million for the project. Someone should talk to former drug czar Bill Bennett about Illinois’ plans. Bennett could be the State’s gambling-addiction posterchild.

As Illinois Expands Gambling, It Will Also Try to Determine How Many Gambling Addicts It Has: Illinois will finally conduct a thorough study of the gambling problem in the state — the first such survey in nearly 30 years. It said it will spend more money to treat addiction, too

Danish researchers have linked a genetic mutation to certain people who smoke too much cannabis — according to those who make such determinations about consumption of the herb. There’s also a genetic correlation between heavy cannabis users and genetically impaired cognition, which existed before their use of cannabis. Cannabis is not being cited as a cause of genetically impaired cognition:

18-Jun-2019 — New research from the Danish psychiatric project, iPSYCH, shows that a specific gene … is the source of a so-called nicotine receptor in the brain, and people with low amounts of this receptor have an increased risk of cannabis abuse. […]

The genetic variant discovered by the researchers affects how much of a specific nicotine receptor is formed. People who have less of this receptor in the brain are at greater risk of becoming cannabis abusers.

Ditte Demontis and her colleagues used a nationwide Danish cohort to analyse the complete genome of more than 2,000 cannabis abusers and the genome of 50,000 control subjects. The researchers subsequently repeated these findings in an analysis of a further 5,500 cannabis abusers and more than 300,000 control subjects. […]

…people with a higher number of genetic variants associated with impaired cognition also have an increased risk of cannabis abuse.

“People who abuse cannabis often do worse in the education system, and our results show that this can be partly explained by genetics. That is to say that people with an abuse problem have more genetic variations in the genome which increase the risk of cannabis abuse, while at the same time negatively affecting their ability to get an education,” explains Ditte Demontis. […]

“We need to undertake even more research into how the genetic differences in the genome contribute to the development of cannabis abuse, and we need to map out the precise biological mechanisms that lead to one person having a higher risk of becoming a substance abuser than another. Our hope is to be able to improve treatment and perhaps in the long-term even prevent this abuse,” says Ditte Demontis.

Marijuana is not a causative factor for schizophrenia, despite the fact many prohibitionists would like it to be. As new research reveals more about psychosis, its causes and triggers, the science gets further away from scapegoating cannabis and its side effects.

Schizophrenia is a problem originating with the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory and emotions, which researchers discovered starts out smaller than normal at birth for prospective victims of the disease. For some, not all, around the ages of 17 or 18, the hippocampus atrophies drastically, shrinking in size, leading to full blown psychosis:

“This meant that we could hypothesise that the smaller size of the hippocampus originates in utero during its development in the womb.” The UNIGE scientists also observed the subfields of the hippocampus in detail, discovering that one of them – called CA3 – was not affected by the decrease in size. “This subfield plays a crucial role in the work of memorisation and seems stronger than the other sub-parts,” adds professor Eliez. […]

The researchers then compared the developmental curves of the hippocampus in people with deletion syndrome but no psychotic symptoms with those who developed psychotic symptoms. “There’s no doubt about our results: around the age of 17 or 18, people with schizophrenic symptoms experience a drastic atrophy in the size of their hippocampus, and especially in the CA3 area, despite CA3 had initially managed to develop normally, unlike the other subfields,” says Mancini. But why?

The researchers don’t have yet a precise answer that could explain the drastic drop in the development of this vital brain structure. But their hypotheses are geared towards environmental factors, such as stress or neuronal inflammation. “The hippocampus of individuals with deletion syndrome is smaller; this means it has to compensate for its size through hyperactivity. In the event of a huge stress factor, especially during the critical period of adolescence, this hyperactivity might lead to a significant rise in glutamate that ‘poisons’ the hippocampus and causes its atrophy,” explains Mancini. The psychotic symptoms may result from this hyper-compensation, which ends up destroying the hippocampus. […]

The study suggests the following hypothesis: the small size of the hippocampus in patients with 22q11 deletion syndrome is defined in the mother’s womb, probably due to poor vascularisation. However, a “second hit” later in development might determine the further hippocampal atrophy and the emergence of psychotic symptoms. As the critical period for schizophrenia is adolescence, the Genevan team is now working on the possibility of preventing the atrophy of the hippocampus in order to preserve its functions.

        Very interesting.

Weed, and specifically THC may be the answer to protecting these young brains from atrophy. The chemical signaling of the endocannabinoid system is retrograde and works to dampen down excess excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate.. THC makes the trip from post-synapse to pre-synapse and shuts down the gates letting Glutamate enter the synaptic space.

If too much glutamate is the problem then THC can help.

If they know about this before ages 17-to-18 dosing kids with THC in a timely fashion could prevent atrophy of the hippocampus.

The real Game Changer is weed.

San Francisco, CA – June 23, 2019 – New research has found that Cannnabidiol is active against Gram-positive bacteria, including those responsible for many serious infections (such as Staphyloccocus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae), with potency similar to that of established antibiotics such as vancomycin or daptomycin. The research is presented at ASM Microbe, the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. […]

Work led by Dr Mark Blaskovich at The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience’s Centre for Superbug Solutions, in collaboration with Botanix Pharmaceuticals Ltd, an early stage drug discovery company investigating topical uses of synthetic cannabidiol for a range of skin conditions, found that Cannabidiol was remarkably effective at killing a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria, including bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics, and did not lose effectiveness after extended treatment.

“Given cannabidiol’s documented anti-inflammatory effects, existing safety data in humans, and potential for varied delivery routes, it is a promising new antibiotic worth further investigation,” said Dr. Blaskovich. “The combination of inherent antimicrobial activity and potential to reduce damage caused by the inflammatory response to infections is particularly attractive.”

Importantly, the drug retained its activity against bacteria that have become highly resistant to other common antibiotics. Under extended exposure conditions that lead to resistance against vancomycin or daptomycin, Cannabidiol did not lose effectiveness. Cannabidiol was also effective at disrupting biofilms, a physical form of bacteria growth that leads to difficult-to-treat infections. […]

DMT is produced in mammalian brains in the pineal gland as well as the neocortex and hippocampus:

27-Jun-2019 — For the first time, a team led by Michigan Medicine [Univ. of Michigan, Jimo Borjigin, Ph.D., of the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology], has discovered the widespread presence of naturally-occurring DMT in the mammalian brain. The finding is the first step toward studying DMT– and figuring out its role — within the brains of humans. […]

Using a process in which microdialysis tubing is inserted into a rat brain through the pineal gland, the researchers collected a sample that was analyzed for — and confirmed — the presence of DMT. That experiment resulted in a paper published in 2013.

However, Borjigin was not satisfied. Next, she sought to discover how and where DMT was synthesized. Her graduate student, Jon Dean, lead author of the paper, set up an experiment using a process called in situ hybridization, which uses a labeled complementary strand of DNA to localize a specific RNA sequence in a tissue section.

“With this technique, we found brain neurons with the two enzymes required to make DMT,” says Borjigin. And they were not just in the pineal gland.

“They are also found in other parts of the brain, including the neocortex and hippocampus that are important for higher-order brain functions including learning and memory.”

The results are published in the journal Scientific Reports. […]

Her team’s work has also revealed that the levels of DMT increase in some rats experiencing cardiac arrest. A paper published in 2018 by researchers in the U.K. purported that DMT simulates the near death experience, wherein people report the sensation of transcending their bodies and entering another realm. Borjigin hopes to probe further to discover the function of naturally occurring levels of DMT in the brain — and what if any role it plays in normal brain functions.

Massospora fungi manufacture either psilocybin or cathinone. When cicadas are infected with the fungus, the insects are induced into a mating frenzy that literally rips them apart:

June 25, 2019 — Massospora fungi make either a drug found in hallucinogenic mushrooms or an amphetamine found in khat leaves, plant pathologist Matthew Kasson of West Virginia University in Morgantown reported June 22 at the ASM Microbe 2019 meeting.

The fungi may use psilocybin, which causes people to hallucinate, or the amphetamine cathinone to suppress cicadas’ appetites and keep the insects moving and mating even after they lose big chunks of their bodies. The finding marks the first time that researchers have discovered a fungus, other than mushrooms, producing psilocybin, and the first organism outside of plants to make an amphetamine.

Massospora fungi are transmitted sexually from cicada to cicada. Huge plugs of fungi form on the insects’ abdomens, and during mating, parts of the abdomens may break away, Kasson said.

Losing body parts would surely slow most organisms down, and yet for the fungal-infected cicadas, “two-thirds of their body might be missing, and they would be whistling as they walk down the street,” Kasson said. The infected insects mate nearly nonstop, spreading the fungi to partners, he and colleagues report June 25 in Fungal Ecology.

Overall, the team discovered 1,176 small molecules in fungus-infected cicadas, including the two psychoactive drugs. […]

If results from the West Virginia study can be applied to humans, the data might provide the ultimate aphrodisiac.
