I appreciate the post itself and while the comments have been interesting, to say the least, I have to say the following. Out of context, incoherent comments with links (some broken) which point to out of context, ranting, incoherent, badly sourced and broken media tend to reinforce a certain, shall we say, stereotype about the people who have vested interest in the issues surrounding prohibition. Ok, I know, this site is called drug war rant but the articles aren't really off puttingly ranty.

Anyway, it's really easy to lay blame on or exonerate the hippies completely - or the wider encompassing generation that contained them - for the decisions of the recent past but the future belongs to those who can coherently, passionately and proactively address the situational system. And these people are of all ages, types and creeds. It's not just a democrat/republican thing. Or capitalist vrs. whatever. It's the writers, the politicians, the reporters, the advocates, the community organizers, the farmers, the industrialists, the futurists, the venture capitalists, the professionals, the technicians, the media savvy and the business people and entrepreneurs who are not only involved in the issues but can articulate what they are as well as articulate and prove potential, reasonable and viable solutions to "outsiders." And I'm still one of those despite years of interest in the issues.

The thing is, until it's figured out by the majority that they don't have to agree with someone else 100% of the time on all existing issues and that despite some deep seated disagreements and even resentment they can still work together, the abuses to everyday people will go on.

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

Where are the old hippies?

Have you been to an antiwar rally? All old hipoies.

Have you been to a healthcare forum? All old hippies.

The question isn't where are the old hippies, the question is where the f**k are the rest of you?

The hippie generation started every great debate of our time; peace, ecology, human right, civil rights, woman's rights, spiritual awakenings, individual freedoms.

Want to know what's wrong with this country, get a mirror.

Have you seen the little piggies
Crawling in the dirt?
And for all the little piggies
Life is getting worse,
Always having dirt
To play around in.

Have you seen the bigger piggies
In their starched white shirts?
You will find the bigger piggies
Stirring up the dirt,
Always have clean shirts
To play around in.

In their sties, with all their backing,
They don't care what goes on around.
In their eyes, there's something lacking;
What they need's a damn good whacking!

Everywhere there's lots of piggies,
Living piggy lives.
You can see them out for dinner
With their piggy wives,
Clutching forks and knives
To eat their bacon.

Well I admit I was shocked at first, the idea that the hippies were responsible for 'everything' being illegal, but putting aside my bias in favor of hippies I've got to admit there's a good argument in favor of this position. It so often is referred to as 'Nixon's war on drugs' and while it is accurate that he started it, it's untrue that it was taken seriously in the years immediately subsequent to his tenure as POTUS. I graduated from high school in 1978, and reality was in that year WOD meant 'we're on drugs' not 'war on drugs'. It wasn't until Mr. Reagan assumed power in the early '80s that the 'war on drugs' gained traction. And Mr. Reagan's animosity to drugs can be traced directly to his tenure as governor of CA in the 1960s. Mr. Nixon may have started it, but without Reagan's impetus the phrase 'war on drugs' would likely be long forgotten by now.

Just the fact that the hippies brought about a lot of good doesn't mean their 'in your face' drug use didn't contribute directly to today's extreme drugs policy. How do we explain Ibogaine being put on schedule 1 so quickly? There's like one guy (Dana Beal) in the entire country who promotes it, and does so as a cure for addiction. But it gets you high, so it has to go on schedule 1, no? Then again it's kind of peculiar that Salvia Divinorum hasn't been placed on schedule 1, and is still legal in most states. The fact that it has remained legal in so many places and Federally does not support the argument above.

The hippies did not start the movements.
Civil rights were being championed way before the Hippies.

"Those who will not read,
have nothing over those who can not read.
Sounds like Glum Bluck. Protest the Oppressed...
There is no "welfare" except corporate subsidies.
Temp food supplements and aid for kids.
Or enslaving themselves with a 51/50 SS!.
Medicaid for seniors and police actions in Iraq and Colombia.
Blue collar cock and bull stories, damn dude.
The hardest job out there is being unemployed.

You think in some way homelessness is a vacation for lazy people?
Where does this mentality come from? Clean air and water is not a threat, in spite of Lush Rimjob oxycontin hissyfits. Civil rights are redundant if the Constitution was followed. 100 years after the Emancipation we still enslave blacks in the prison system. Rhetoric and Hobgoblins hurled for what? You tough guys attacking peaceniks? For daring to question a Police Action for profit? Or Cliarence Thomas fighting so hard for Monsanto's right to dump dioxins into the Mississippi river. Chernobyl? Or Palin selling out Alaskans to Exxon, still bartering for less than a penny on the dollar of the actual tax paid cost of their Valsleeze fuck up.

Everyone of your Fortune 700 Club Corporate gods stashing tax money in Cayman shelters is laughing at every worker having to make it up. Tom Delay thugs and the Dick Armey of Lobbyists tugging the nose-rings of the blue collar brown-noses, jerking that Iranian crude oil red white and blue piece of plastic. Made in Thailand sweatshops from Marc Souder donations to round up pot growers for the slave labor. Or kids, these drug worrier beer talking cowards hide behind in their verbal sputums.

Real brave blaming the poor and not a peep about the International World Banksters getting a trillion dollar bailout, and then getting hundreds of billions of tax dollars in yearly interest on loans to the government. Or the trillion to the Military, I mean Wall Street Security. Only when the greediest minority isn't getting a chunk do their Fauxnewts puppets orders come down to bus ditzo lemmings to the townhalls. To censor citizens by yipping and hollering, "fighting" seniors and sick people over less expensive health care.

I Blame the corporate religions for duping y'all into buying timeshares in fairyland. To accept any horshit tale a haircut and suit mouthfarts, especially with a twang. Pitifuckingful... because there are some real Southern Patriots from The Band to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Willie, Waylon and Johnny Cash. Kristofferson and Ray Charles.

These hate lovers pickin on hippie kids, same as the "pigs" with water canons, rubber bullets, tear gas and real bullets fired by scared kids in uniform, killing other kids so Standard Oil could keep selling tanks diesel. Renting the "National" Guard to die for Iraqi police action lies? Now they're down to a few new and improved modern Family KKKlans, cleaned up and programmed into the world of loving hate for geeeeeeeezus. Jesus is probably pissed.

Peace don't pay. Healthy citizens don't pay. Clean environment and fresh water and air produced from trees don't pay. Prevention and Cures don't pay. "Southern Patriots" throughout the Biblebelt, abort more unborn on cotton and wars, than Roe V Wade. All the while yipping and hooting to keep organic Hemp illegal.
There ya go Pat Riots, er Rat Pious? Pridiots?

1864 ecology movement? That's John Muir in 1892.
Earth day was 1972. Those darn funny southern comforts praising OPEC plastic barges hauled out to sea, from every coastal city and the OPEC plastic doesn't biodegrade, just floats in the ocean, now there's a floating island blocking out sunlight, thanks to the crackers and blood thirsty Neocons.

Leary was Leary, If people worried one inkling as much about themselves and not other people potentially having a good time. Justifying ignorance as a reason for losing only reinforces the ignorance. Racism, sexism or Hippie scapegoating by naive blindly obedient anti-Americans despising the Constitutional rights of all citizens should be put onto the streets and their belongings sold. Primarily those we pay with taxes.

When someone overturns the lying bogus CSA,
like Leary did the Lying bogus Marijuana Tax Act.
Not just spewing hate and violence, firing up a bunch of crank smoking,
drunken white trash gunutz. Then I'll take "Southern Patriot" seriously.
They never left King Georgia.

It says: Hippies started the ecology movement. They combated racism. They liberated sexual stereotypes, encouraged change, individual pride, and self-confidence. They questioned robot materialism. In four years they managed to stop the Vietnam War. They got marijuana decriminalized in fourteen states during the Carter Administration.”
~ Urban Dictionary

Marijuana Tax Act

Made in Thailand sweatshops from Marc Souder donations to round up pot growers for the slave labor. Or kids, these drug worrier beer talking cowards hide behind in their verbal sputums.

Real brave blaming the poor and not a peep about the International World Banksters getting a trillion dollar bailout, and then getting hundreds of billions of tax dollars in yearly interest on loans to the government. Or the trillion to the Military, I mean Wall Street Security. Only when the greediest minority isn’t getting a chunk do their Fauxnewts puppets orders come down to bus ditzo lemmings to the townhalls. To censor citizens by yipping and hollering, “fighting” seniors and sick people over less expensive health care.

I Blame the corporate religions for duping y’all into buying timeshares in fairyland. To accept any horshit tale a haircut and suit mouthfarts, especially with a twang. Pitifuckingful… because there are some real Southern Patriots from The Band to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Willie, Waylon and Johnny Cash. Kristofferson and Ray Charles.

These hate lovers pickin on hippie kids, same as the “pigs” with water canons, rubber bullets, tear gas and real bullets fired by scared kids in uniform, killing other kids so Standard Oil could keep selling tanks diesel. Renting the “National” Guard to die for Iraqi police action lies? Now they’re down to a few new and improved modern Family KKKlans, cleaned up and programmed into the world of loving hate for geeeeeeeezus. Jesus is probably pissed.

Peace don’t pay. Healthy citizens don’t pay. Clean environment and fresh water and air produced from trees don’t pay. Prevention and Cures don’t pay. “Southern Patriots” throughout the Biblebelt, abort more unborn on cotton and wars, than Roe V Wade. All the while yipping and hooting to keep organic Hemp illegal.
There ya go Pat Riots, er Rat Pious? Pridiots?

1864 ecology movement? That’s John Muir in 1892.
Earth day was 1972. Those darn funny southern comforts praising OPEC plastic barges hauled out to sea, from every coastal city and the OPEC plastic doesn’t biodegrade, just floats in the ocean, now there’s a floating island blocking out sunlight, thanks to the crackers and blood thirsty Neocons.

Then I’ll take “Southern Patriot” seriously.

George Wallace smiled every time T Leary opened his mouth. T Leary made the good ol' Southern Boys look like Patriots over the droves of welfare drugged out Hippies. If you could have been a fly on the wall, I bet you would have heard some Southern Boy say: Where was T Leary in 1864? The hippies did not start the movements. Civil rights were being championed way before the Hippies.
